The provincial capital of Baluchistan, Quetta is the situated at an altitude of 1,680 meters (5,500 feet) above sea level. Known as Shal or Shalkot in the common parlance thanks to its location at the north end of the Shal valley, the city is also called the fruit bowl of Pakistan.
As Quetta lies close at the meeting point of Iran and Afghanistan, its strategic location cannot be understated. Connected by rail with Lahore, (727 miles) away, with Peshawar (986 miles), and Karachi (536 miles). A new road connects it with Karachi through Khuzdar, Makran and Las Bela. It is also connected with Zahidan (Duzdab), Iran, by railway. Quetta tribesman are strong and silent in their bearing, they are known for their friendliness and hospitality. To make a visitor comfortable is part of their tradition.
The eclectic Archaeological Museum at Fifa Road is treasure trove of rare antique guns, swords and manuscripts while the Geological survey Department on Sariab road has a finest collection of rocks and fossils.
For the wildlife enthusiast and nature lovers Quetta offers the 'Hazarganji Chiltan National Park'. As the name Hazarganji suggests the park is the natural habitat of Markhors, "Gad" (wild sheep), wolves, wild cats, leopards, hyena, hares and porcupines while the avian population comprise partridge, warblers, shikras, blue rock pigeon, sparrows, hawks, rock nuthatch, golden eagle, falcons and bearded vultures etc.

The park is home to some 225 species of pretty exotic plants, such as Pistachios, Juniper, wild Olives, wild Ash and wild Almonds. You can find a wide range of shrubs like wild fig, wild cherry, barberry and herbs like Ephedra intermadia, gerardiana etc.
You cannot resist the temptation of savor the sumptuous dish "Sajji" (leg of lamb) and "Landhi" (the whole lamb).
Quetta ranks among the major places of tourist attractions in Pakistan. Full of excitement, delights and adventure, the city is home to some of the finest bazaars Suraj Gang Bazaar, Shahrah-e-Iqbal (Kandahari Bazaar) and Shahrah-e-Liaquat, Liaquat Bazaar. You can buy pleasant handicrafts. These handicrafts include the Baluchi mirror work embroidery admired all over the world.
