Travel to Peshawar

Peshawar One of the most interesting cities in Pakistan, Peshawar derives its name from a Sanskrit word "Pushpapura" meaning the city of flowers. The first Mughal Emperor Babur has referred to the flowers of Peshawar in his memoirs. This ancient and legendary city of Peshawar is 172 kms west of Islamabad and is close to the Khyber Pass, an important gateway between East and West. Many tribes and invaders used this pass to come and settle in the subcontinent, prominent among them being Aryans, Scythians, Persians, Greeks, Bactrians, Kushans, Huns, Turks' Mongols and Mughals.

Peshawar, the capital city of North-West Frontier Province in Pakistan, is a famous frontier town and the meeting point of the Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. The confluence of the old and the new is taking place smoothly.

Being the city of the proud Pathans, Peshawar is home to a large number of places of interest to the tourists. Every street and square that makes up the historic quarter of the city of Peshawar bursts with joy and excitement.

Till the creation of Pakistan, Peshawar was encircled by a city wall with sixteen gates. The most famous of these gates is the Kabuli Gate. A pass through this gate will lead you to the Khyber Pass and on to Kabul.

Formerly known as the Victoria Memorial Hall built in 1905, the Peshawar Museum is a major attraction of Peshawar. The museum is a treasure-trove of finest specimens of Gandhara sculptures, tribal life, the medieval period and ethnography.

The imposing Balahisaar Fort is a major highlight of the city of Multan. True to its name, the fort was originally built by the first Mughal Emperor Babur. It underwent several modifications under the Sikh Governor of Peshawar, Hari Singh Nalva, in the 1830's under the guidance of French engineers. It is now home to government offices.

Among other highlights of Peshawar are many bazaars including the Qissa Khawani Bazaar) and the Mahabat Khan Mosque. Built in 1670 A.D, the mosque is a fine specimen of Mughal architecture. Elaborate decoration of floral work and calligraphy on the interior of the prayer hall of the mosque is a feast for the eyes.
