"Everything and Anything can happen in Murree. Romance is in the atmosphere intrigue is in the air. The roads to this happy holiday's resort embrace both the heaven and earth. In Murree it is easy to fall in love".
Situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters (7,400 feet) above the sea level, Murree is one of many hill stations established by the British in the Himalayan foothills during the 19th century.
The pine forests, extraordinary mountain scenery and tranquility of the place all these go a long way to make Murree an excellent weekend gateway from the capital city of Islamabad.
Founded in 1851, Murree served as the summer capital of the government of Punjab during the British Raj until 1876. Later Simla in the state of Himachal Prdesh was accorded that honor. The hill station of Murree is still enveloped in an air of colonial charm in the form of the churches, parks, schools, clubs and cafes.
With the foundation of Islamabad as the capital of Pakistan, Murree has been witnessing rapid growth. In the heart of the town of Murree one can find an Anglican Church, which was consecrated in May 1857. Across the Church are the most important commercial establishments, the Post Office, General Merchants with European goods, tailors and a millinery or hat store. In the center of the town is the Mall where you can stroll while enjoying a Pakistan holiday. In fact promenading and shopping are integral part to Murree tourism. There are colorful bazaars below the Mall where you can indulge in shopping. Murree is renowned for the Kashmiri shawls, fruits, furs, walking sticks and nuts. The best quality of pistachio nuts in Pakistan is found in Murree.
