35 km north of Islamabad, Taxila is one of the most important archaeological sites in the subcontinent. An ancient center of learning and the cradle of the famous Gandhara art, the place has three distinct cities during different phases. All of these are carefully excavated and preserved in Taxila. Out of these three, first is Bhir Moundn, built around sixth century B.C. Established around the 2nd century B.C., the second Sirkap city is on the opposite side of Tamara stream; and finally Sirsukh, built by the Kushan rulers in the first century A.D. This is the most modern city of all. Added to these sites Taxila has over 50 archaeological sites within its radius of 30 kms. Dhamarajika Stupa and Monastery (300 BC - 200 AD), Bhir Mound (600-200 BC), Sirkap (200 BC - 600 AD), Jandial Temple (c.250 BC) and Jaulian Monastery (200 - 600 AD) are most important of these.
